The Salisbury Symphony announces its 43rd season, and tickets are now on sale. The season begins with a North Carolina premiere on October 24th and two performances of “The Nutcracker” in December. In January, they host the North Carolina Symphony and then Maestro David Hagy returns to the podium for a Family Concert in February with the Piedmont Dance Theatre in a performance of “Peter and the Wolf,” a concert in March of music by Brahms, Beethoven, and Barber, and a Pops Concert in May titled “Solving Mysteries.”
The title of the opening concert – Chasing Light -- is named after Chasing Light…, the composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Joseph Schwantner that the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra will be the first to perform in North Carolina. The Salisbury Symphony is proud to participate in the second round of Ford Made in America – the largest orchestral commissioning consortium in the country’s history – and their performance is part of Ford Made in America, a partnership program of the League of American Orchestras and Meet The Composer. Ford Made in America is made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company. Major support for the program is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional funding from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and The Amphion Foundation. Cloninger Ford is the Concert Sponsor.
Other pieces on the program are inspired by the theme of “light,” including “City of Light” Clarinet Concerto, a piece by Persis Vehar commissioned by the city of Buffalo, New York to celebrate the fact that it was the first city in America lit by electric lighting. Ms. Vehar plans to attend the concert and will conduct workshops in the county’s schools beforehand. Eileen Young, Principal Clarinet with the Salisbury Symphony, is the featured soloist in this clarinet concerto. Neilsen’s “Helios” Overture and Haydn’s Symphony No. 7 “Noon” round out this “light”-hearted program.
“The Nutcracker” returns in December for two performances: Saturday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 20th at 2:30 p.m. As in the past, reserved seating only is available. The Piedmont Dance Theatre of Kannapolis will delight children of all ages with their creative and highly professional dancing. Bob and Lois Pruehsner are the Presenting Sponsors.
In January 2010, the North Carolina Symphony presents “Visiting Vienna,” with Conductor William Henry Curry. The “trip abroad” includes a waltz by Johann Strauss, Jr. (of course!) and his Overture to Die Fledermaus, Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2, and Symphony No. 5 by Schubert. Warm music for a January 30th evening…
The Family Concert on Sunday afternoon, February 21st, will explore the art of dance, featuring the Piedmont Dance Theatre’s hugely popular “Peter and the Wolf.” Bill and Nancy Stanback are the Concert Sponsors.
On March 20th, the Salisbury Symphony “breaks tradition” by presenting the music of what Maestro David Hagy considers “three B’s” of music: Brahms, Beethoven, and Barber. Three Chairs of the Salisbury Symphony will be featured soloists: Carla Copeland-Burns, Principal Flute, Anna Lampidis Glantz, Principal Oboe, and Gregory Hall, Co-Principal Trumpet. WDAV 89.9 is the Media Sponsor.
Rounding out the season, the Pops Concert on Saturday, May 8th, will focus on the theme of mysteries. The All-County Fifth Grade Honors Chorus will participate in a concert of music from movies, television themes, and musicals. Being mysterious himself, Maestro Hagy will not reveal more about this mystery concert!
The March 20th concert will be held in Varick Auditorium at Livingstone College; all other performances will be held in Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College.
Season tickets are now on sale and will be available right up until the evening of the first concert on October 24th. Reserved seats for “The Nutcracker” will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. General seating is available for the Symphony’s season series.
